With the frosty months of winter quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about snow. With commercial roofing, you have to keep in mind the weight that your roof can bear and keep an eye on the accumulation of snow on your building.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) lays out these general guidelines on the weight of snow accumulation:

  • 10-12 inches of fresh, powdery snow is equivalent to one inch of water, or approximately 5 pounds per square foot.
  • Packed, older snow weighs more than new snow. So, 3-5 inches of this type of snow is equal to the weight of 10-12 inches of new snow.
  • One inch of ice is equivalent to one foot of fresh snow.

Once the accumulation of snow is approximately 20-25 pounds per square foot, you want to consider having the snow removed in order to remove the burden it is placing on your roof. This will help you avoid roof collapse or roof damage. We recommend you hire professionals to do the job. If you decide to use your own employees, be sure to follow OSHA safety protocol when removing snow from the roof.
If your roof is not strong enough to handle the load of winter weather, you will want to have professionals strengthen your roof as soon as possible, or at least before the next winter hits.
